3 Reasons You Should Not Refinish Your Cabinets

By Richmond Ace Cabinet Refinishing

It is a question of whether to refinish cabinets or not. Here's the answer. Each kitchen is different. Every kitchen is different.

  • Do you want to keep your existing cabinets or change their colors?
  • Are your cabinets made of laminate or solid hardwood?
  • Do you need to change features like countertops, islands, or glass doors??
  • Are you ready for your kitchen to be "out of service" for several weeks?

Definition. To Refinish

Refinishing wood cabinets can be a tedious and time-consuming process. First, remove any paint, varnish, or stain from the surface. Next, sand the cabinet or apply a chemical stripping product. The old finish can be removed and a new one applied.

Reason #1: Cost and Labor

Cabinet refinishing could be an option if your kitchen is in good shape and you like the cabinetry style. Laminates are not able to be sanded or removed. MDF can also only be repainted or refaced. However, you can save some money by doing it yourself. The labor-intensive process requires the use of a lot of caustic chemicals. It will cost less to replace the cabinets than to hire a professional and it will probably cost at least half as much to reface them.

Reason #2: The Finished Appearance

Refinishing solid wood cabinets requires that they are in good condition, with no warping and splitting. Even under the best conditions, the wood surface may be less forgiving due to sanding. This can cause inconsistent finishes. Also, remember that darker finishes are only possible if the doors have been bleached first.

Reason #3: Your Cabinetry Will Last a Lifetime

Once cabinet refinishing is completed, it's difficult to maintain the finished product. Refinished cabinets are susceptible to color changes caused by heat, direct sunshine, water from sinks, or dishwashers. MDF can expand from moisture and cause paint to peel or crack.

Give the appearance of a happy face

You might consider refacing instead of refinishing. Cabinet boxes, doors, and drawer faces are replaced with brand new ones. A thin, strong veneer then is applied on cabinet sides and frames. This ensures that your kitchen cabinets will match perfectly and are durable, affordable, attractive, and long-lasting.
